The experience of building the chair together with your fellow carpenters is rewarding!

  • During the building process, the magic of the extremely smart and socially conscious design principle of internationally renowned, Utrecht-born architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld unfolds.
  • Building with familiar and unfamiliar company to make a tangible and beautiful chair offers a sense of achievement and advances the possibilities of working together.
  • Above all, you become an agent in determining the destination of the chairs.

More about Sitting is a Verb - Rietveld for (Un)usual Business

'Sitting is a Verb–Rietveld for (Un)usual Business' is a project by Aimée Zito Lema with whom Casco has begun a long-term collaboration. Sitting is a Verb was initiated in 2010 by the artist as her contribution to IMPA, a recovered factory in Argentina run by a self-organized group of workers. Rietveld removed copyrights from many of his designs, including the crate chair so that anyone could build his or her own for private use. The workers at IMPA were gathered together to make their own chairs for the then newly opened University of the Workers. Now this exercise is transposed to the Conversation Market organized by Casco and Kritische Studenten Utrecht in search of different economic landscapes in Utrecht. Aimée Zito Lema is contributing to the Market by developing the concept for the setting.

On Saturday 29 June, a spirited group of people gathered at the adventure playground Fort Luna and managed to make in total 15 Rietveld Crate Chairs together. Our aim was to make 30 chairs in total for the Conversation Market. Half done, another half to go!

The chairs are used during the Conversation Market. Their afterlife is determined collectively by those who built them.
