‘Welkom in Utrecht’ is an initiative by regular people in Utrecht. At the start of September 2015, a group of people created a Facebook page. Simultaneously, with no relation at all, another group of people launched a website to increase the involvement of the people in Utrecht with refugees. We combined these two initiatives into one platform which focuses on coordinating and stimulating activities for refugees which reside in emergency shelters. Without any subsidies, but full of “Utrecht” energy. Besides that we wish to provide refugees and helpers a platform. Normal people, like you and I. The platform ‘Welkom in Utrecht’, the municipality of Utrecht and the Centraal Orgaan opvang Asielzoekers (COA) collaborate closely together. It has now become a portal for providing help to refugees in emergency shelters.
